BISCU.COM WEB FILE STORAGE SOLUTION

FTP Server

Biscu.com offers free FTP hosting to all its members. Free FTP hosting allows you to share files between accounts using a free FTP Server. FTP servers allow fast and easy access to files and most computers already have an FTP client installed. An FTP-server works similarly to an HTTP server accept files can be uploaded and browsed as easily as they can be downloaded. FTP servers don't use web pages for navigation. Instead they send raw commands and data back and forth. FTP clients handle these commands for the user. If you do not have an FTP client, follow the instructions below.

Users connect to the FTP server using a FTP client. Most modern web browsers support FTP. If your browser supports FTP you should be able to connect directly to ftp.biscu.com. All computers running Microsoft Windows are also equipped with a client called FTP. Using this command line tool may be difficult for novice users. Several free, graphical clients are available for free download such as FileZilla. You can download FileZilla for free from http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/filezilla/FileZilla_2_2_4c_setup.exe.

Once you've got an FTP client, you can connect to Biscu.com's free FTP server by connecting to ftp.biscu.com using your biscu.com username and password. For FileZilla Users:

  1. Right-click and save the FileZilla setup program to your desktop: http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/filezilla/FileZilla_2_2_4c_setup.exe

  2. Run the setup program and follow the on-screen instructions for installing FileZilla.

  3. Once FileZilla is installed, you are ready to begin accessing files shared on Biscu.com’s free FTP server. Open FileZilla.

  4. Next to Address in the toolbar enter the name of the biscu.com FTP server ("ftp.biscu.com"). Next to User enter your biscu.com username (your email address). Next to Password enter your biscu.com password. Next to Port type "21" and click Quickconnect.

  5. FileZilla will connect to the FTP server, a process which may take a few seconds. A list of files will appear in the Remote Site box. These files are identical to the files you see using the web interface on biscu.com.

  6. Files can easily be dragged back and forth between your computer and biscu.com’s FTPserver.

Using the Microsoft FTP command line client is pretty simple. Click Start, and then Run. Type "FTP" and press enter. An "ftp>" prompt will appear, type "Open" and press enter. A "To" prompt will appear, type "ftp.biscu.com" and press enter. A "user:" prompt will appear, enter your Biscu.com username (your email address) and press enter. A "Password:" prompt will appear, enter your Biscu.com password. You will be returned to the "FTP>" prompt. Type "help" and press enter for a list of available commands. To find out what a command does type "help" followed by the spacebar and the name of the command and then press enter. For example, to find out what the "Send" command does, type "help send" and press enter. In short, the following commands may be particularly helpful:

  • Send
  • Recv
  • Pwd
  • Cd
  • MkDir
  • RmDir
  • Quit

After typing any command, press enter. You will be prompted for any parameters that the command requires. For example, if you enter the "Send" command (to commence an upload); you will be prompted for the "local file" then the "remote file".

There are no account settings that need to be changed in order to use the FTP server with your account. That is, free FTP hosting is included with all accounts by default.

If you have problems connecting to biscu.com’s FTP servers, please contact the webmaster for technical assistance. It is not abnormal to be disconnected from FTP servers after several seconds of inactivity. If this occurs, try reconnecting to the FTP-Server. If you have problems installing FileZilla, you may also want to contact the FileZilla development team at SourceForge.com.
