There are a lot of Internet file storage
services available to choose from. Most of them offer
very similar service but a few stand out from the rest
while another few fall far behind. This article will
teach you what to look for when shopping for a place
to store your data online.
The amount of internet storage space
you will be getting is a very important factor. Some
services will charge a surcharge if you go over your
quota. Others will surcharge you for upgrading your
package to receive more internet storage space. Some
services only offer one package. Try to pick a service
that will provide enough internet storage space to suit
your current need plus some growing room. Check into
the cost of upgrades right away.
The features offered by the internet
file storage services are what set one service apart
from the rest. What type of security is provided? How
often, if ever, are backups made? What is the service’s
uptime guarantee, if there is one? What kind of customer
support is offered? Is file sharing offered? Can sub-accounts
by created and managed? Are there limits to the type
of data I can store? Can I access my data via FTP?
Services range dramatically in price
and often the most expensive isn’t the best. One thing
you do not want to find yourself doing is automatically
assuming that if the price is high the internet storage
service is great. This is faulty logic and a very expensive
mistake. I have no idea why some services set their
prices so ridiculously high. Maybe they are targeting
just those people would go with them just for that reason.
When you’re looking into a service, try to scratch
the surface as much as you can; especially if the price
seems awkward. Also make sure you read the fine print.
Some companies draw you in with very low prices but
charge fees and surcharges which were not made clear
when you signed up. Stay away from internet storage
services that surcharge for bandwidth or backups.
Free internet storage has an obvious
benefit, being free. Free internet storage companies
rarely provide more than ten or so megabytes of space,
decent customer support (if any at all), backups (ever),
etc. Stay away from free internet storage unless you’re
only using it for personal use.
You can learn a lot by looking into
a company’s reputation. What its users say about it
should give you a pretty good clue what you can expect.
A good place to find user reviews is by searching Google
groups or Google Webquotes. Google groups will give
you access to thousands of opinions on everything from
the best hair dryer to the coolest looking potato chip
ever. Webquotes is a specialized web search that finds
pages which discuss other pages in conversation.
Always look around for the right value.
Expect to pay more for more space and better internet
storage services but don’t get robbed by overpriced
internet file storage startups with pretty-looking web-sites.
